Youth Sports and Fitness Program Coordinator (Full time)

SquashWise seeks a motivated, mission-driven candidate for the position of Youth Sports + Fitness Program Coordinator at SquashWise, Baltimore’s squash and education program. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with athletic/fitness experience (college athletics, community league, coach, fitness trainer, or physical education teacher) and interest in working with middle school youth (ages 10-14) in Baltimore City.

Position Description

Position Description: The Youth Sports + Fitness Program Coordinator will directly coach and inspire students enrolled in SquashWise’s middle school program at their daily fitness and squash sessions, recruit and manage volunteer squash coaches, and design health promotion programming. The successful candidate will bring a desire to enrich opportunities and improve outcomes for Baltimore City Public School youth, using athletics as a tool for motivation and engagement.

Qualifications: Prior experience with squash is strongly preferred but not required for this position. Candidates should have some experience with sports as an athlete, coach, trainer, or teacher. Priority will be given to candidates with substantial experience in coaching youth sports and/or in racquet sports (tennis, racquetball, squash). The Youth Sports + Fitness Program Coordinator is expected to effectively recruit and manage volunteer coaches to provide specific squash skill development at sessions, and to themselves become proficient in squash within the first three (3) months. (Professional training and ample practice opportunities will be provided by SquashWise.)

The most important prerequisites for this position are the desire and skills to successfully work with middle school youth from challenging neighborhoods. The Youth Sports + Fitness Program Coordinator is expected to build strong and lasting rapport with all students, parents/guardians, volunteers and partners. Candidates should have excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills, which are necessary to juggle multiple responsibilities and respond quickly to changing conditions.

Main Job Responsibilities

  • Job responsibilities:
    • Sports-Based Youth Development:
    • Plan a fun and active curriculum for squash and athletic development, including squash skills and strategy, team-building exercises, general fitness sessions, and related health programming (ex: nutrition for young athletes).
    • Directly coach students on court each day: provide group instruction and demonstration of squash fundamentals; run drills for students on multiple courts; provide individualized feedback and encouragement using a growth mindset framework. (Training in squash provided, if needed)
    • Coordinate and supervise volunteer coaches during practice.
    • Document and track student progress toward outcomes (attendance, squash skills, fitness, etc.), using this data to inform and achieve individual and group goals.
    • Facilitate students’ advancement in the sport of squash, including working with the Squash Director to organize participation in local matches and regional tournaments.
    • Program Coordination:
    • Coordinate and chaperone student transportation to daily sessions, local matches, and regional tournaments, including regularly driving SquashWise’s minivan and/or 14-seat minibus (training provided; standard driver’s license and three years of clean driving history required).
    • Communicate effectively, proactively and regularly with students, parents, and teachers through a variety of modes (phone, text, social media, etc.).
    • Build meaningful and lasting relationships with students, teachers and parents, demonstrating and encouraging SquashWise values in all interactions.
    • Collaborate with all SquashWise staff on program-wide initiatives and projects; perform other administrative duties as needed.
    • Volunteer Coach Management:
    • Recruit and manage a diverse group of volunteer coaches, with ongoing outreach to collegiate squash teams and community groups.
    • Plan, schedule and actively communicate with all volunteer coaches to ensure a minimum number of volunteers at every practice session.

     

Desired qualifications & skills
  • Requirements
    • Availability to work full-time during the week and some Saturdays. Hours (school-year): weekdays from 10am-7pm; some Saturdays from 12-3pm and occasional weekend trips. Summer hours change slightly to adjust to our weekday summer camp program (roughly 8am-4pm).
    • Availability to chaperone occasional weekend trips for college visits, squash tournaments, and other student experiences.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Excellent time management skills.
    • High School Degree required; B.A. or higher preferred.
    • Current driver’s license with at least 3 years of driving experience; clean driving record.
    • Pass a criminal history background check.

     

Salary

Commensurate with experience, ranging from $35,000 to $41,000 with generous benefits and vacation.
